What can and can't I do with digital sound files?

Can
Can't
  • Use legally downloaded sound files as part of instruction
  • Copy legally downloaded sound files to other machines
  • Use sound files for rewards or entertainment

i-Tunes and similar sites allow you to purchase digital music for your personal use. However, this does not translate into freedom to do anything you want with the music. As long as the files that you are using are legal, you can use them as part of face-to-face instruction. However, you may not alter the files, copy the files to another location or use the files in a non-instructional manner. Just as marching bands must purchase the rights to the music they perform, so all other school groups must purchase performance rights for any music played outside of a classroom and unrelated to a specific course of study.
